Day 2 of our Compassionate Communities blogs tells the story of Erica Squire who decided to challenge herself by walking 20,000 steps a day during the first 21 days of lockdown to raise money for Queenscourt as a thank-you for the care her late husband Will had received at the hospice.

Over three weeks, Erica walked a total of 218 miles, usually clocking up 22,000 steps a day, and has raised £1,500.

Erica felt compelled to raise money for Queenscourt following the death of husband Will, who died at 55, just a month after being diagnosed with lung cancer.

What makes her feat even more of an accomplishment is that Erica has herself been fighting stage four bowel cancer since 2017.

She was determined, though, to walk for Will. “He was so grateful to Queenscourt for the five-star treatment he received there,” said Erica. “He said it was like a hotel where the level of dignity given to him was what we would all hope for.

“My walking was about paying something back and I know Will would have approved of it. I wanted to do it for him. I wanted to push myself but didn’t realise how much I would be pushing myself. I am glad I’ve done it but was equally glad when I’d finished. I’m really pleased with the money raised, people have been so generous.”
